The Lake County Sheriff's Explorer Program is open to young men and women with an interest in learning more about careers in the field of Law Enforcement. For individuals to become Explorers with the Lake County Sheriff's Office, they must meet these minimum qualifications:
- Be between the ages of 14 to 20 years old
- Maintain a 2.0 grade point average, while attending school
- Be of good moral character
- Have a clear/clean criminal record
- Be able to attend bimonthly scheduled meetings
- Be willing to volunteer time to attend Explorer functions
- Be willing to commit to the Explorer Code and exemplify the professional image of the Lake County Sheriff's Office
Young people who meet the minimum qualifications and are interested in becoming Sheriff's Explorers will experience various opportunities in the development of:
Personal character- Life skills
- Leadership skills
- Career opportunities
- Learning how to serve the public
Sheriff's Explorers will learn skills relating to:
- General public service
- Crime prevention
- Law enforcement
- Traffic control
- Basic criminal investigations
- Communications
- Public speaking
Once the appropriate training standards have been met, Sheriff's Explorers can participate in "ride-alongs" with Sheriff's Deputies. Sheriff's Explorers will also participate in structured competition events with Explorer Posts from other law enforcement agencies.
